About British Contracts
British Contracts is a cutting-edge contract law platform that leverages artificial intelligence and is guided by decades of human legal expertise. We are built and led by Geoffrey Caesar, a freelance solicitor of England and Wales with 25 years of experience in commercial law and contract drafting.
Our mission is to revolutionise how contracts are drafted and reviewed, making the process faster, more innovative and more accessible, without compromising on quality or trust. We combine advanced AI technology with human legal oversight to deliver reliable contracts in a fraction of the time, inspiring confidence and enthusiasm for our clients. In short, we’re bringing the future of contract law to businesses and individuals today.
Our Founder
Geoffrey Caesar’s legal career is the foundation of British Contracts. In the early 2000s, he honed his skills negotiating international energy contracts, handling complex, high-stakes agreements across multiple jurisdictions. He was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn in 2005 and later cross-qualified as a solicitor in 2008, giving him a dual perspective on the law. After years of experience in both private practice and in-house roles, Geoffrey has embraced innovation in legal practice. In 2019, when the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) introduced a new “freelance solicitor” model (a practice pathway that did not exist before November 2019), Geoffrey was one of its early adopters.
Operating as a freelance solicitor allows Geoffrey to work directly with clients outside the traditional firm structure, a flexibility he leveraged to explore novel ways of delivering legal services. He also works as a consultant with a partner law firm, in particular for reserved matters and those involving handling client money.
A 20-Year Vision Realised
From early on, Geoffrey harboured an ambitious vision. He believed that contract drafting could be transformed through technology. For two decades, this remained a distant goal due to the limitations of older legal software. British Contracts was founded to realise that vision finally.
Today, thanks to advancements in AI, Geoffrey’s long-held dream of automating and improving contract drafting is a reality. Every contract we deliver is handled or overseen by Geoffrey himself or a senior solicitor or partner law firm he has personally vetted, ensuring that our tech-driven approach never loses sight of legal accuracy and professionalism. This blend of innovation and experience defines our ethos and inspires trust in our clients.
From Labour-Intensive Drafting to AI Innovation
To appreciate what we do, it is helpful to understand how contract drafting has traditionally been approached. Not long ago, automating contracts was a laborious, rules-based process. Lawyers or programmers had to create templates with numerous IF-THEN rules and maintain extensive clause libraries for every scenario.
As a result, even “automated” contract assembly required heavy developer input and painstaking attention, essentially hand-crafting each document by code. Drafting a bespoke agreement from scratch was equally time-consuming. Reviewing precedents, selecting clauses, and manually editing terms could take days for a single contract. This old approach was effective but slow, rigid and resource-intensive.
AI Changes the Game
The emergence of advanced AI, particularly large language models, has utterly changed what’s possible in contract drafting. Instead of relying solely on pre-coded templates, we can now generate a solid first draft of a contract by describing our needs to an AI.
Our platform’s AI can understand context and language to produce tailored clauses on the fly, something unimaginable with older tools. A process that once took many hours of human effort can now be accomplished in minutes with AI assistance.
However, we want to be clear: AI is not a silver bullet. It is a powerful tool that must be used wisely. British Contracts stands out because we don’t just let a generic AI churn out text; we combine AI efficiency with legal expertise to ensure the output is practical and enforceable. We are developing a platform at British Contracts that enables faster and more flexible document drafting than ever before, freeing you from the drudgery of manual drafting without compromising quality.
Why AI Drafting Needs Expert Guidance
While AI is incredibly powerful, generating reliable legal documents requires skill and diligence. This is where British Contracts truly leads. Our contract AI doesn’t run on autopilot. It benefits from expert prompt engineering, carefully crafted by experienced specialist lawyers.
In simple terms, prompt engineering means we know how to ask the right questions and provide the necessary instructions to the AI to achieve the desired results. An AI’s output is only as good as the guidance it is given, especially in law. Crafting that guidance demands both legal knowledge and an understanding of how AI “thinks.” At British Contracts, we dedicate significant time to refining prompts and testing outputs, ensuring that the AI produces contracts that make legal sense.
It’s also important to note that running advanced AI models takes serious computing power and investment. The sophisticated AI engines that can draft contracts are not the kind of thing you run on a home laptop or access using free or cheap AI tools.
We have invested in robust infrastructure (and continue to invest as our platform grows) so that you don’t have to worry about the technical heavy lifting. Many casual users who have tried generic AI services for legal drafting have learned their limitations the hard way. We’ve all seen cautionary tales. For example, in 2023, a pair of lawyers famously got sanctioned after a ChatGPT-generated brief cited six entirely fictitious court cases. The lesson is clear: AI without proper oversight can lead to serious mistakes.
At British Contracts, we combine AI with human quality control at every step. We understand both the power and the pitfalls of AI in law. That’s why for every AI-drafted contract from our platform, we offer a competitively priced legal review.
To ensure that our AI-generated draft contracts are as legally accurate as possible, we utilise an advanced technique called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to enhance the AI’s reliability.
In plain English, RAG means our AI doesn’t rely solely on its built-in “memory”. It first retrieves relevant, trusted legal information from our curated knowledge base of almost 4,000 precedent legal documents and millions of words of legal guidance, and then uses that information to generate your contract. By having the AI work with a custom library of legal precedents and up-to-date resources, we ground its output in real, vetted content.
This dramatically improves accuracy and helps avoid the kind of “hallucinations” (fabricated facts or laws) that plain vanilla AI is prone to producing. RAG makes the AI behave like it’s taking an open-book exam. It looks up the correct answers before writing, drastically reducing the risk of errors or omissions.
The result is an AI-driven drafter that’s far more reliable than a generic chatbot. And because experienced lawyers oversee our system, you get the best of both worlds: the efficiency of AI and the assurance of human expertise.

Embracing Retrieval-Augmented AI (Our Tech Edge)
How does trained custom AI work? Let’s take a look under the bonnet.
As mentioned, British Contracts uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to combine AI with a wealth of legal knowledge.
Think of RAG as providing our AI with a trusted legal assistant who feeds relevant facts and clauses into the AI while it drafts. Instead of generating text blindly, our system first searches a curated database of legal sources. This could be relevant statutes, case law, or our growing library of contract clauses and guidance. Then, it feeds the most relevant snippets of information into the AI model as context for drafting.
The result is an AI that’s informed by real legal data when it writes. In specialised fields like law, this approach dramatically improves both the accuracy and reliability of the output. Independent analyses have highlighted that an AI paired with domain-specific knowledge is far more trustworthy for professional tasks.
We continually expand and update our legal knowledge base, which powers the RAG system. This includes internal research, templates, best practice guidance, and insights from our articles. We share some of this knowledge openly through the articles and guides published on our website. This not only benefits our clients directly but also ensures that our AI is continually learning from the latest material.
British Contracts is not here to resist the rise of AI in law. We’re here to lead it.
We fundamentally recognise that AI is rapidly improving and that soon, for many types of contracts, an AI will be able to draft better, faster and cheaper than any human.
Recent studies have already demonstrated that AI can match or even surpass human lawyers in certain tasks. For example, in one benchmark study, AI legal tools performed at or above the level of human lawyers in many core tasks. Another well-known experiment found that an AI achieved 94% accuracy spotting risks in NDAs (non-disclosure agreements), compared to only 85% by experienced lawyers. These advancements suggest that the day when AI drafts a “perfect” contract isn’t far off.
British Contracts is preparing for that day, building the systems and workflows to harness these AI capabilities for our clients’ benefit as soon as they are available.
The Future of Law
“AI will soon draft contracts better than any human. Lawyers will not disappear – we will evolve. We will become AI system architects, client advisors, and quality controllers, guiding intelligent tools with our judgment, ethics and professional accountability.”
– Geoffrey Caesar, Founder of British Contracts
This perspective is at the heart of everything we do. We envision a future where the role of lawyers undergoes a dramatic transformation. Instead of spending hours tweaking wording in a contract, tomorrow’s lawyers will spend that time ensuring the AI has the correct parameters, double-checking the output for legal nuance, and focusing on truly bespoke advice.
In other words, lawyers will shift from being the hands that draft to being the minds that design and oversee the drafting process. Geoffrey’s 25 years of experience have taught him that the real value a lawyer provides is in understanding the client’s goals, anticipating risks, and ensuring fairness and compliance, not in the clerical task of typing out clauses. As AI handles more of the clerical tasks, lawyers can focus on higher-value aspects.
This isn’t just our internal view; legal industry experts agree that a symbiotic relationship between human lawyers and AI is the way forward, with lawyers refocusing on strategic, high-value work as routine drafting becomes automated. Crucially, human lawyers will remain indispensable as the ultimate guardians of quality, ethics and accountability.
We carry professional duties to our clients and the courts, and we have regulatory oversight by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and insurance backing our work, responsibilities that AI alone does not meet.
British Contracts is built on this philosophy. By choosing British Contracts, you’re not just getting a one-time service. You’re joining us on a journey to the future of legal services.
